Mamphego Phasha Studios is a South African creative practice working across film, documentary, television, photography and visual storytelling. Founded in Soweto in 2016, it exists to make work that reveals people honestly — their labour, their dignity, their complexity, their light.
01Observation
We do not begin with cameras. We begin with curiosity.
Before a treatment is written, we research. We sit with a subject until we understand not only their story, but the frame through which they see the world. The camera does not flatter. It witnesses. It holds still while the world moves.
02Craft
Craft is not decoration. Craft is care made visible.
When we choose a frame, we are making an argument about what matters. When we cut, we draw a relationship between two pieces of the world. When we use silence — and we use it deliberately — we give the audience room to arrive at their own understanding.
03Context
South Africa is where we learned to see.
We have learned to see beauty where others see difficulty, and that the most compelling frame is often the most honest one. We are still in Soweto. Its textures are in our work. Its history is in our frame.
04Dignity
A story is not a service. It is a responsibility.
Subjects are collaborators, not case studies. A three-minute film deserves the same rigour as a feature documentary. We do not keep a lower standard of care for smaller budgets. We have one standard.
We believe the most important work is the work that lasts.
Not because it is loud. Because it is true.
We believe a story told with honesty travels further than a message engineered for a demographic.
We believe technology is a tool. Human attention is the achievement.
We believe the silence before a cut is as important as the cut.

Ten years of practice, told plainly and in order. In 2016 the studio began in Soweto; today it is still there.
2016
Founded
Mamphego Phasha Studios begins in Soweto as a small, precise practice — a filmmaker's instinct that the stories being told about South Africa were not the only ones, or the most important. Institutions whose legacies deserved careful documentation. Communities whose vitality was going unrecorded.
The years between
Built
A team, a practice, and a studio: equipment, post-production suites, broadcast capability. Relationships with retirement funds, medical schemes and pan-African platforms, and films that connected their expertise to the communities they served.
July 2021
Tested
The civil unrest that moved through parts of South Africa reached the studio in Soweto. Equipment was stolen and the studio was looted. Edited archives — years of footage and finished films — were lost.
After
Rebuilt
With the support of the AVBOB Special Disaster Relief Fund, through its enterprise and supplier development programme, the studio was restored. Equipment was replaced and the practice resumed. The relationships endured, because they had been built on something more durable than equipment.
Now
Clearer
The studio came through with a clearer sense of what it is for: to keep institutional memory, to document cultural life, and to work with organisations that understand how they are seen is not a peripheral concern. Still in Soweto. Never considered being anywhere else.
We do not serve industries. We serve organisations — each with a particular history, and a particular set of things it needs its audience to understand.
